How to Support & Empower Your Early Careers Talent

Careermap Media Group in collaboration with Cohesion Early Talent, cohosted an event focusing on what organisations can do to support the transition from education to employment for their early careers cohorts.

In this panel discussion, we heard from the perspectives of the employer, student and higher education to understand what steps and measures can be put in place to support early careers recruits in these unprecedented times - specifically in the wake of Covid and the current cost of living crisis.

Key themes of the session covered:

  • The effect that covid and the current cost of living crisis are having on the choices of apprentice and graduate career decisions

  • Who is it affecting and what can be done to change it?

  • Innovation and best practices which can be applied to support the early careers community; finance and mental health support will form part of the discussion

When asked what employers can do to make the recruiting experience for early careers candidates more empowering and effective, our panellist and recent graduate Shantel, l from Sage, shared these top tips:

  • Be open, transparent and discuss your values from day one

  • Be inclusive… and start from the application process (e.g. is your application process transparent and accessible to applicants from all backgrounds?)

  • Don't assume they know anything about interviews or the practicalities of working (Explicitly explain the processes applicants will need to go through i.e. How do you do a remote interview? / How do you work remotely? )

  • Focus on the ROLE not the brand (I.e. Talk about the merits and opportunities of the job they will be doing - not the business they will be working for)
